The Slovenian Julian Alps

Slovenia’s Julian Alps are an extension of the Italian and Austrian Alps. They offer superb walking amongst jagged snow-capped peaks, with Mt. Triglav the highest point at 9395 feet. Below the peaks are fertile valleys, with underground rivers, high cliffs and narrow steep gorges, fed by dramatic waterfalls, the results of the limestone rock structure. The towns and villages are very pretty, with many old buildings, decorated by colorful window boxes. The valleys are full of meadows, orchards and vegetable gardens, with an amazing display of wildflowers, particularly in early summer. Your twin centres of Kranjska Gora and Lake Bohinj offer many possibilities for superb mountain walking at all levels of ability, as well as all the facilities you need. You will stay in high quality family run hotels giving the excellent accommodation, food and service you expect from a Grassroutes holiday.

The cables and lifts will carry you to rolling alpine meadow areas, for easier mountain walking. These in turn lead to higher, more strenuous options, for those who prefer something more demanding.

The walking programme is designed at Grassroutes Grades B & C. With two Leaders we can offer a choice of two walks on each of the 10 walking days. The distances and ascents / descents may be modified to suit the needs and abilities of the group members but will generally be :-

Grade B

Up to 3,000 feet of ascent / descent, on way-marked paths. Terrain may be steeply inclined and rough underfoot, with loose rock at times. Snow may be encountered at higher levels. Distances 10-15 miles.

Grade C

Up to 1,500 feet of ascent / descent, on way-marked paths. Terrain may be steeply inclined at times and rough underfoot, with possibly some loose rock. Distances5 - 8 miles.

Note: On some Grade B walks, more strenuous extensions may be offered but only at the request of the members of the party.

During the holiday there will be two free days, when you can relax and do your own thing, or join one or more of our optional extra sightseeing excursions. Possibilities include Lake Bled, the capital Ljubljana, which has a delightfully restored historic old town and the famous Postojna Caves.

Within Slovenia will be by deluxe coach or comfortable passenger van, depending on the size of the group, from Ljubljana Airport to your hotel and return. Local transport will be by private coach / passenger van, local service bus, cable car or chair lift as appropriate.
